The Muslim community in Paris

Paris is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in Western Europe. Estimates put roughly 220,000 Muslims within the city and around 1.7 million across the greater Paris region, somewhere between 10 and 15 percent of the area's people (France doesn't record religion in its census, so all figures are estimates from country-of-origin data). The community's heart is easy to find: the Goutte d'Or and Barbès–Château Rouge in the 18th arrondissement, with their North and West African markets, halal butchers and bakeries, and the northern suburbs of Seine-Saint-Denis, one of the most heavily Muslim departments in the country. Families here trace their roots to Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali, Senegal and beyond.
