The Muslim community in Lyon

Lyon, France's second-largest urban area, has a substantial and well-established Muslim community, most of it of North African heritage, with growing Turkish, West African and Comorian populations. As with everywhere in France, there's no official religious census, but the community's footprint is clear across the city and its suburbs — La Duchère in the 9th arrondissement, and the eastern banlieues of Vénissieux, Vaulx-en-Velin and Villeurbanne, where much of Lyon's working Muslim population settled from the 1960s onward. The Grande Mosquée de Lyon, inaugurated in 1994 in the 8th arrondissement, is one of the largest purpose-built mosques in France, drawing thousands each Friday and up to eight thousand worshippers at the two Eids. For young, practising Lyonnais Muslims, finding a spouse who takes the deen seriously — without dating apps — is a real challenge.
