The Muslim community in Manchester

Manchester has a large, long-settled Muslim community. In the 2021 Census, 122,962 residents of the city identified as Muslim, about 22.3% of the population. The community's historic centres are in the south and north of the city: Longsight, Rusholme, Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall, where Pakistani families who arrived in the 1950s and 60s put down roots that now run three or four generations deep. Rusholme's Wilmslow Road, the famous Curry Mile, sits at the heart of it, lined with halal restaurants, sweet shops and prayer spaces. Alongside the Pakistani majority are growing Arab, Somali, Libyan and Kurdish communities, many drawn by the city's universities. For single Muslims here, the challenge is a familiar one: plenty of community, but few serious ways to meet someone for marriage. Zawji exists to answer that, halal, wali-friendly and built around intention rather than swiping.

Manchester's Muslim community is anchored by Pakistani families in Longsight, Rusholme, Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall, some of the oldest settled Muslim neighbourhoods in the north of England, now joined by Arab, Somali, Libyan and Kurdish communities around the universities.
