"I'm a convert from Toronto. Most halal apps assumed I had family setup ready. Zawji's wali-converts guide actually helped me find an imam-wali before I even registered."

Quick answers

I'm a convert with no Muslim father. Can I still use Zawji?+

Yes. Many converts use Zawji. For sisters: the imam-wali pathway is established Islamic practice — your local imam can serve as your wali. We have a complete guide on finding and approaching an imam-wali. For brothers: no wali requirement applies to you directly.

How do I find an imam-wali if I'm new to my community?+

Step 1: Identify 2-3 mosques near you. Step 2: Attend Friday prayers and approach the imam after, briefly. Step 3: Schedule a sit-down where you share your conversion story and that you're considering marriage. Step 4: Ask if he would serve as your wali or recommend a senior brother. Most imams expect this conversation and welcome it.

Will brothers/sisters on Zawji assume I have a cultural background I don't?+

Profiles include 'revert' status as an optional field, and you can describe your background in your own words. Many members are themselves second-generation, mixed, or revert. The platform doesn't enforce cultural assumptions — you set the framing.

Will my non-Muslim family be a problem?+

Not for Zawji. Some born-Muslim families do prefer matches from similar backgrounds, but increasingly families welcome converts as a sign of sincere faith. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly honored converts. We have a guide on telling non-Muslim family about your nikah — many find it less dramatic than expected.

Should I change my name after conversion + marriage?+

It's a personal choice, not Islamically required. Many converts keep their birth names; some adopt an Arabic name they feel connected to; some use both. The Prophet ﷺ only changed names that meant something harmful. Your name is yours.
